Safety

Safety is perhaps the most important subject because everybody has to deal with safety. Every company is also responsible for ensuring that safety is taken into account and that everyone receives proper instructions. 
The picture below shows some typical situations.

Safety applies not only to yourself, your behavior is also important for the safety of others. There are important rules in the Netherlands related to safety.

To gain a clear understanding of how the setup works, we first look at the home page. Directly below the picture of the Netherlands, we see several videos. When people are introduced to Dutch for the first time, these videos are a good starting point. Here, they learn everyday words and expressions. Show the videos, and if there’s a group, begin with a review session. For example, nod your head “yes” and ask what the Dutch expression is. If you want to review the video about the house, mute the sound and pause the image at intervals. Then, ask for the corresponding word.

    Call an emergency number and if possible, warn your boss or the special person who is trained to help in such a situation. (in Dutch, we call that person a BHV’er. Explain what has happened and where. If possible, also inform your supervisor.

    If there is a situation where a life is at risk, you should call: 112

What you always must know in case a fire may occur

1. Always be aware at the place where you are working were the emergy exit boards are.

2. Always be aware where the fire extinguishers are.

3. If different alarm signals are used at you workplace, you should know the difference.  

In case of fire: memorize the 5 rules

What you must do in case you discover a fire

Activate the first fire alarm you see and try to help others to evacuate the building. Close doors behind you to help prevent the fire from spreading. Follow the evacuation procedure if you’re at your workplace or follow the escape route signs if you’re a visitor. Listen to instructions given by the Fire Marshal.

1. In case of fire, stop directly whatever you are doing and leave your workplace behind as safely as possible;

2. If there is a fire extinguisher and it seems clearly possible to put the fire out, use it

3. Warn your colleagues and supervisor if this is possible; You shout loudly:
“brand brand brand”

 4. If there is a possibility for giving alarm: use it.

5. Leave the workplace and if an emergency route is indicated, use it

LIFTING

Rules for lifting

1. Never bend or lift unnecessarily, use aids.

2. Stand straight in front of the load; never lift anything with a twisted back.

3. Hold the load as closely as possible to your body, avoid reaching too far.

4. Bend through your knees, keep your back as straight as possible, lift gently. Use your strength efficiently, lift using your leg muscles, do not make any twisting movements.

5. Do not lift too much (max 20 kg) , ask your colleagues for help with heavy and large items.
